Weather is playing an important role in Landscape Photography. Anybody can go to Mulholland Point Lighthouse in Canada and take a picture of Lubec, Maine across the Lubec Narrows strait. However, interesting low clouds formations in the sky are less prevalent and the picture takes a different look than at high noon on a sunny day.

Great clouds over Lubec Maine as seen from Mulholland Lighthouse Point
Great pictures are not only of great subjects, they also need great light. Great light or interesting weather can create a nice picture from an ordinary subject. Look at Varina Patel pictures in her gallery: Geology and Weather and you will agree with me. Weather makes great picture as much as the landscape itself.

How to do you get both, great weather on nice landscape photography shot?
Weather of photographic interest is rather unpredictable. Usually bad weather has more potential. More potential is not enough though. In order to succeed you should go ahead according to the following steps when preparing to take pictures while travelling:

Find out great subject or site to shoot before getting there.  Document yourself on how to get there from your landing base.  Consult the following resources to do so;
Stuckincustoms.com Stuck on Earth apps for iPad or Android;
Research Filckr with GPS Coordinates;
Panoramio.
Find out about the best timing to get the light you want:
The photographer ephemeris on PC or Mac;
Sun surveyor for Android and iPhone / iPad.
Get up to the minute weather report
Weather Channel Max for iPhone;
Weather Channel for Android.
Always be ready to leave in a hurry:
Battery fully charged;
Memory card to spare;
Cell phone, tablet fully charged;
Camera bag with needed equipment and rain protection;
Water and food ready to leave for hours;
Tripod.
In a few words, getting great landscape shot is like hunting or fishing. You can go to great place and come back empty-handed. This being said and as you have heard over and over, better be safe than sorry. Preparing for your next photo expedition is more important than the few hours you will be on site. If you are ready, you won’t miss opportunities and will get the most of these few hours.
